Our History

1931

Harry Eglinton, a former chauffeur and motor engineer from London, decided to start a coach hire business in Sheerness trading as Island Luxury Coaches and initially operating a Sheerness to London coach service.

Having moved to Sittingbourne the business quickly expanded and in 1938 Harry purchased the current garage and head office in Chalkwell Road Sittingbourne.

1969

Clive Eglinton, Harry’s son takes over the business.

The following period saw the fleet grow and a dedicated depot was developed at Murston to house and maintain the expanded fleet.

1990’s to present

The Company expands into DayBreaks, Coach Holidays, London commuter service and local bus services. However, coaches and customer satisfaction are still very much at the heart of the business.

Chalkwell is still run by Clive, together with his Son & Daughter, Roland and Louise Eglinton.
