A Sittingbourne bus operator has driven to the rescue of a charity which befriends the homeless.

Chalkwell, who run bus services throughout Kent, is to provide free travel to and from job interviews for homeless clients of the charity Porchlight.

As the charity celebrates its 40th anniversary, the offer of support from Chalkwell has been described as ‘brilliant.’

“This is absolutely great,” said Jo Dawes on behalf of Porchlight which has a hostel in Sittingbourne for 21 young people aged 16 to 24.

“To have the backing of Chalkwell will be so important to these young people in particular,” said Jo today.

“To have a travel permit to attend a job interview and then be able to catch a bus back will be good for their personal esteem and confidence.”

Porchlight, whose first hostel for the homeless was in Canterbury, now have 11 throughout Kent as they try to get the unemployed working again.

Said Karen Lockyer, Chalkwell Coach Hire & Tour Sales Manager:  “Porchlight is now the second charity we are supporting in 2004 following our arrangement with Air Ambulance which has been ongoing since the beginning of the year.

“We are aware that through their hostels Porchlight are working very hard to assist the less fortunate who have fallen on hard times.

“For our part we hope free travel to job interviews will demonstrate our commitment to the local community,” she added.
